欧盟和亚洲国家呼吁释放昂山素季 (EU and Asian Nations Call for Release of Aung San Suu Kyi)

欧盟以及亚洲国家敦促缅甸军队领导人释放反对派领导人昂山素季并实施民主改革。来自欧盟和亚洲国家的40多名外长星期二在德国汉堡举行亚欧会谈结束时签署了一份联合宣言。

缅甸外长奈温出席了这次会谈。奈温为他的政府延长昂山素季软禁的决定进行了辩护。他争辩说， 释放这位现年61岁的民主派领导人可能会激发政治不稳定。

在过去17年里，昂山素季大部分时间都以某种形式被拘禁。上星期晚些时候，缅甸官员又把对她的软禁延长了一年。

昂山素季领导的全国民主联盟赢得了1990年的全国大选，但是军方领导人拒绝让这个党执政。

European Union and Asian nations are urging Burma's military leaders to release opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and to implement democratic reforms. More than 40 foreign ministers from European and Asian countries signed a joint declaration Tuesday at the conclusion of Asia-Europe Meeting talks in Hamburg, Germany.

Burma's Foreign Minister Nyan Win attended the meeting. Win defended his government's decision to extend its detention of Aung San Suu Kyi, and he argued that the 61-year-old democracy leader's release could fuel political instability.

Aung San Suu Kyi has spent most of the past 17 years in detention of some form. Late last week, Burmese officials extended her house arrest for another year.

Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy won a general election in 1990, but military leaders have refused to let the party take office.
