The number of suspected and confirmed swine flu cases climbed worldwide Tuesday as health officials work against the flu believed to be spreading from Mexico.

Classes have been canceled in schools around Mexico City. Health authorities, trying to protect the country's residents and visitors, have discouraged large-group gatherings, even restricting restaurants to take-out only, CNN reported.

At least 112 cases have been confirmed worldwide, including the 64 U.S. cases, health agencies reported. Six confirmed cases were reported in Canada, 11 in New Zealand, two in both Spain and the United Kingdom, and one in Israel.

The majority of the U.S. confirmed cases are from a school in New York City. In addition to the confirmed cases, CNN reported several states -- such as Indiana and North Carolina -- reported possible swine flu cases.

In Florida, an Adventist Health System official said a case of swine flu was confirmed in Orlando, WFTV reported.

"A case was diagnosed here in Orlando today on a tourist from Mexico who came to Disney attractions two days ago to visit," the system's chief medical officer Loran Hauck wrote in an e-mail obtained by the Orlando television station.

Countries in North and South America, Europe, Asia and elsewhere have indicated they have stepped up scrutiny at ports of entry of travelers from Mexico, the United States and Canada.

The Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta said it expects to see more cases reported in the near term. Acting Director Dr. Richard Besser said the incubation is typically two-to-seven days, and the median age of the patients confirmed of having swine flu is 16.

Besser noted 3,600 deaths occur during a typical flu season, adding, "influenza is a severe infection."
